The name came from a poem.
Amy Leff started Throwing Stars Jewelry in 2001. The name comes from a poem she wrote — about taking chances, making big changes, and pressing the do-over button. Risk, transition, and the moments where you decide who you are going to be next.
Twenty-plus years later that is still the through-line. The work is perfectly imperfect by design: mixed metals, hammered and twisted textures, pieces built to be layered, stacked, and worn every single day rather than saved for an occasion that never quite arrives.
Alongside the collection, Amy takes commissions — engagement rings, wedding bands, memorial pieces, and heirloom redesigns that turn something inherited into something worn.

I’m not sure if it’s my maiden name… Goldschmitt, aka gold-smith? Or whether it’s as simple as: jewelry is pretty and I want to make it. Whatever the case may be, jewelry is who I am. It’s not a “job,” it’s part of me. Even when I’m not actually in the studio, I’m constantly thinking jewelry. It’s one of the first things I look at when I meet you. I know I am supposed look someone straight in the eyes, but I find myself looking at your earrings or necklace first.
My jewelry love affair started in 2001. I was going through the process of making a lot of changes…new friends, new job; I had a new lease on life.
I wrote, “Throwing Stars,” a poem about taking chances and making big changes and pressed the “do-over” button. And voilà, Throwing Stars Jewelry began on my dining room table!

Through the years, my jewelry has developed a core aesthetic. My designs are perfectly imperfect! All of my jewelry is handcrafted and I love to mix dainty with edgy. I favor contrasts, so you will see a lot of mixed metals, hammering, twisting, and options for layering. There is always something new!
As I’ve grown as an artist, I am thrilled to expand my custom jewelry projects. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on engagement rings, wedding bands, and memorial jewelry.
