What to Do When You’ve Lost an Earring (with Video Tutorial)

Losing an earring can be devastating, especially if it carries a lot of sentimental value. But now that you're left with only one earring out of the pair, what can you do with it?

At Throwing Stars Jewelry, I am no stranger to bringing new life to old, broken or mismatched pieces of jewelry. In this article, I will help you uncover an easy and effective way to still get use out of this very special piece of jewelry.

Let’s get started!

Supplies You Will Need:

  • Flat-nose pliers

  • Chain-nose pliers

  • A necklace chain

  • Package of jump rings

Step One: Remove the Earring from the Backing

The first thing you will need to do is separate the earring from the backing it is attached to. For this DIY project, I recommend using a style of earring that came attached to a latch back, fish hook, kidney wires, or a lever back. The decorative piece of the earring will be much easier to detach than an earring mounted to a post.

With your chain-nose pliers in hand, all you need to do is very gently open the ring, or another type of fastener holding the earring to release it from the backing.

Step Two: Attaching a Jump Ring

To attach your earring to the necklace chain, you will require a single jump ring. In this example, I am attaching a chandelier-style ornament with a 5mm size jump ring. The best way to open up your jump ring is to gently twist it with both pliers from side to side.

While you can open it from other directions, using the side-to-side motion keeps the ring in a perfect circle, rather than bending it out of place.

Step Three: Attach the Earring to the Chain

Once you have opened the jump ring and slid your earring pendant onto it, it is time to attach it to the chain. You will affix the pendant to the chain by doing the same motion you made to open the jump ring—however, this time in reverse!

Simply grab both of your pliers and with gentle pressure close the jump ring with the chain and pendant enclosed inside. Once you have inspected your work and everything looks well attached, you are ready to layer your new necklace with others in your collection!
